MATTERS UNKNOWN

Biography

Led by composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Enser, MATTERS UNKNOWN enters a new chapter with their debut Tru Thoughts release.

Described by Jonathan as “celestial blues wrapped in contemporary global grooves,” MATTERS UNKNOWN exists at the meeting point of spiritual jazz, psychedelic soul, ambient composition and global rhythmic traditions. Rather than treating these as genres to blend, Jonathan approaches them as interconnected musical lineages, drawing on years of collaboration, travel and deep listening to create music that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

At the heart of the project is a simple but profound idea: that creativity begins when we learn to listen.

The release follows a period of remarkable artistic and personal growth for Jonathan. Since releasing Deepings: A Song of Spirit, he has performed across India and South Africa, toured the UK with Nubiyan Twist, undertaken artist residencies, developed large-scale conceptual works exploring disability, spirituality and ethics, and continued to expand his practice as a composer, producer, flautist, vocalist and drummer.

Alongside these creative milestones came profound personal change. Following revision surgeries and an amputation in 2023, Jonathan has undergone an extraordinary period of physical rehabilitation while navigating financial hardship and specialist therapeutic work. These experiences have not become the subject of MATTERS UNKNOWN, but they have undeniably deepened the perspective from which the music is made, bringing greater patience, openness and compassion into its sound.

That spirit has always defined Jonathan’s work. Raised in rural England, his musical life has been shaped by a relentless curiosity about tradition, community and cultural exchange. Extended periods spent in New Orleans, Cuba and India, alongside years of performing with Nubiyan Twist, have informed an artistic language that honours the interconnected histories of the African diaspora while remaining unmistakably his own. Through Nubiyan Twist, he has collaborated with artists including Nile Rodgers, Mulatu Astatke, Tony Allen, Patrice Rushen, Pat Thomas and Soweto Kinch.

Previous releases have earned support from Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, NPR, NTS and Clash Magazine, while sold-out performances at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the Purcell Room, Church of Sound and Jassmine (Warsaw), alongside appearances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Festival and We Out Here, have established MATTERS UNKNOWN as one of the UK’s most compelling creative voices.
