Eulerism
Matica
Released: 12 Sep 2025
Label: Tru Thoughts
Liverpool-based producer/songwriter/composer and DJ, Matica brings club energy fused with free jazz on his Tru Thoughts debut, Eulerism.
The song started off as a note on Matica’s phone after a party, saying ‘Bebop Techno’. Running with that seed of an idea, Matica developed what he thought that would sound like and the result is a frenzy of double bass, saxophones and a big swing/bebop ride cymbal, which balances club-sounding punch with the feeling of a live band playing.
Andy Wileman from the nu jazz group, Bop Kaballa, contributed the wonky piano chords and runs during eight bars of free jazziness in the middle. Explaining the impetus behind the song, Matica says, “I wanted to make a club track with the feeling I get when I listen to really hot, energetic jazz. I’m a big believer in making the tracks you’d want to hear or find and this kind of high-octane, jazz-focused sound, is something I’d personally be stoked to find.”
Although relatively new on the scene, Matica started learning piano aged six and fell in love with making music during his time playing in a band in his late teens/early 20s. Describing his sound as “a smattering of styles and influences, usually woven into a heavy, clubby setting,” his influences are multinational and multi-genre, from The Beatles to Daft Punk; Fela Kuti to James Brown. Matica’s tastes were shaped by DKD’s (and the comprising individual artists) broken beat and the more jazz-influenced UK sounds. “Remarc completely changed for me what I heard to be possible with cutting up drums and programming.”
Matica has seen support from broken beat pioneers like IG Culture and Afronaut, as well as Jay Carder, Jamz Supernova (BBC 6 Music), Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy and Macca (NTS). He has released music on Dance Regular and supported Mala, Crazy P, Chase & Status, LTJ Bukem, Aroop Roy, and Sully.
