Our first Releases Round Up of 2021
Here’s a round up of the releases that have got 2021 rolling for us.
Nikitch & Kuna Maze kicked off 2021 for us, our first release of 2021 saw Sivey (CoOp Presents / Soulection) and grime artist and Tru Thoughts label mate Crafty 893 take it in turns to remix Nikitch & Kuna Maze’s “46 Rue Du Fort”, a song inspired by the duo’s rehearsal space in Brussels. Next up WheelUP returned to unveil the neo-soul fused single “Good Love” taken from his highly anticipated debut full-length of the same name, which lands on 23rd April 2021. Linking up with Afronaut – broken beat pioneer and founder of Bugz in the Attic, WheelUP also enlists the help of Alabamian deep south rapper Brint Story and vocalist Destiny Will on the future bruk anthem. In the artists words: “Good Love is something that I generally want to see in the world. It’s timeless broken beat”. After his fierce collaboration with Big Zuu on “Back It” which garnered support from GRM Daily and DJ Target (BBC 1Xtra), South-London grime artist, MC & producer Crafty 893’s new offering is “Wotless” – an aggressive radio-set-showdown produced by grime’s cornerstone DJ, Sir Spyro. It’s Crafty 893’s second outing from his much-hyped debut full-length ‘Smart Dumb’ which lands on Friday 9th April on Tru Thoughts. The single is accompanied by Metal Gear Solid inspired video in which Crafty’s punchlines and metaphors are visually portrayed through the use creative animation. Highly-fêted producer Anchorsong returns with his idiosyncratic soundscapes of shoegaze, ambient and supple hip-hop grooves, on the Tunisia capital-inspired “Tunis Dream”. The infectious single builds on Anchorsong’s long-standing tradition of “borderless music”, fusing global sonic particles, intricate rhythms, and minimal yet immersive lush interplays of sound. “Tunis Dream” also marks a decade since the release of Anchorsong’s debut album ‘Chapters’, a record that kickstarted the partnership with Tru Thoughts and propelled the loop manipulator onto the world stage. “Tunis Dream” is avaiable ot stream or buy HERE
New Tru Thoughts signing Anushka revealed their debut with “You My Love”. The future soul and electronica duo of Max Wheeler (producer) and Victoria Port (singer/songwriter) transcend the UK jazz-electronic scene on “You My Love”, melding hypnotic rhythms with a sweet melody, carried by entrancing female vocals. The single is the band’s first new music since their debut album ‘Broken Circuit’ (Brownswood), which gained support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Annie Mac, Phil Taggart, Jamz Supernova, B.Traits and Mary Anne Hobbs alongside features in The Guardian, The Arts Desk and Dazed. Continuing the love theme “Love Dancer” is the latest single from producer and multi-instrumentalist Hemai and features lyricist and vocalist FiFi Robo. It is taken from the hotly tipped 22-year-old’s debut album ‘Strange Beauty’ (out 7th May), Developed during the UK’s lockdown the track looks to the natural world for signs of hope and healing; “Love Dancer” ebbs and flows as all of us have in difficult moments, particularly in recent months. The track provides a moment to pause, to breathe and to recollect; “It’s a song about acknowledging what’s going on, slowing the fear down and fighting through whatever needs fighting. The last release in the first couple of months of 2021 was recorded at The Bridge Studios, NYC, “What It Is: Live Before the Lockdown” is an EP of live edits and chamber re-workings taken from Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer Sly5thAve’s latest album ‘What It Is’. The release features prolific New York MC Marlon Craft, long-term friend and collaborator Melissa McMillan and fellow Texas-born and Brooklyn-based vocalist, lyricist and musician Denitia.
