Potential Badboy

Label: Tru Thoughts

Jungle pioneer Potential Badboy (aka Chris McFarlane) sets the tone for his upcoming project with Do What They Say, a new single featuring multi-genre vocalist and songwriter Syren Rivers and respected MC, artist and Kool FM presenter Indigo Reign.

One of the original architects of jungle and a key figure across drum & bass and UK garage since the early ’90s, McFarlane continues to evolve while staying rooted in the culture he helped shape. On Do What They Say, he teams up with two seasoned voices to deliver a message-driven slice of modern jungle, offering rich, melodic textures with lyrics that speak to self-trust and staying grounded.

“There’s something powerful about us bringing different vocal energies to this track – it mirrors the light and shadow dynamic we all navigate,” explain Indigo Reign and Syren Rivers. “We wanted to create something honest that resonates with people’s own experiences.”

Syren Rivers brings three decades of vocal mastery to the collaboration, fresh from his acclaimed Royal Albert Hall performance, alongside Fabio & Grooverider with the Outlook Orchestra. His extensive collaborative history spans work with artists from Arrow Benjamin to Bryan Gee and Kyoto Jazz Massive, showcasing his versatility across genres, while maintaining his distinctive vocal identity.

Indigo Reign (formerly Lady MC) contributes her groundbreaking legacy as one of jungle and drum & bass’ foundational female voices. As a pioneer who broke barriers as one of the first women to take the mic in the scene and on radio (Kool FM), her journey from live performances, alongside icons like Afrika Bambaataa and DJ SS, to her recent focus on studio work, reflects her artistic evolution. Her contributions to music and community have been recognised with an MBE and numerous industry awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Drum & Bass Awards.

For Potential Badboy, it’s another chapter in a career that’s been pushing boundaries for over 30 years. From early anthems like Work The Box and Greetings, to his ground-breaking work with SOUR Records alongside Shy FX & T.Power, and later his shift into UKG as Chris Mack (remixing the likes of Shaggy and Mary J. Blige), McFarlane’s output has always been one step ahead. His return to jungle in the 2000s with DJ Hype’s Playaz camp spawned bangers like Play It Kik It, Girlz, and You’re Mine, solidifying his place as one of the most versatile producers in the game.
