Footshooter & Allysha Joy offer liminal, jungle-rooted jazz
Footshooter is joined by soul-jazz powerhouse Allysha Joy whose meditative reflections on the shifting tides of relationships unravel in Folding. The track is taken from Footshooter’s upcoming album, The Oasis, which sits at the crossroads between jazz and broken beat, and is peppered with collaborations. The album also features the equally thoughtful and collaborative singles Here To Learn (feat. Andre Espeut), Obelisk (feat. Natty Wylah & brother portrait), and Cycles (feat. James Mollison), showcasing the work of the South London-based producer and DJ.
“Ally’s vocals are so rich and instantly recognisable that they turn everything they touch to gold,” reflects Footshooter after watching Allysha effortlessly layer her unmistakable runs over a jungle-inspired beat crafted just hours earlier. This sentiment manifests in Allysha’s husky ruminations that flow naturally between the mounting drum line and chiming synths as though off-the-cuff while remaining masterfully refined. The poetic declaration from “lover to lover,” is anchored by the line, “It’s all the ease and pain at once,” echoing the push and pull of romantic vulnerability.
“Folding is all about that feeling of desperate desire, overcome by just the slightest touch, a soft word spoken or a kiss. It is the pain of wanting what is just beyond your reach and the joy of connection as it comes to be, even if only for a moment.” – Allysha Joy
A cornerstone of the soul-jazz scene, Allysha is a deeply expressive artist based in Naarm (Melbourne), celebrated as a singer, songwriter, producer, and formidable Fender Rhodes player. Known for her work as a solo artist and as the frontwoman of the renowned collective 30/70, she has carved a distinct niche in contemporary music.
The Folding instrumental is a convergence of Footshooter’s influences from broken beat, jazz, house, and more, as well as another example of the collaborative space he cultivates
