Led by composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Enser, MATTERS UNKNOWN enters a new chapter with the release of ‘The Wind and the Forest’. Rooted in breath, landscape and deep listening, the single offers the first glimpse of an expansive new body of work that further develops Jonathan’s singular artistic vision.

Described by Jonathan as “celestial blues wrapped in contemporary global grooves,” MATTERS UNKNOWN exists at the meeting point of spiritual jazz, psychedelic soul, ambient composition and global rhythmic traditions. Rather than treating these as genres to blend, Jonathan approaches them as interconnected musical lineages, drawing on years of collaboration, travel and deep listening to create music that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

At the heart of the project is a simple but profound idea: that creativity begins when we learn to listen. That philosophy is beautifully realised in ‘The Wind and the Forest’, a composition inspired by the restorative power of nature and the search for stillness beneath the noise of contemporary life.

“My creative practice has always been about peeling back the layers of ego and socialised constructs; beneath which an untold body of inspiration lies.”

The piece grew from two recordings that became its emotional foundation: wind moving through a pine forest in Scotland, captured by a friend, and a layered chorus of duduk performed by Jonathan using circular breathing. Rather than serving as atmospheric textures, they became the architecture of the composition itself, allowing melody and harmony to emerge organically from the sounds of breath and landscape.

Written in a single session with composer and multi-instrumentalist Miles Spilsbury (Puma Blue, Physics House Band), the track arrived with remarkable ease. “We built the melody and harmony with ease, connecting on the same creative and spiritual wavelength. It was a total joy to make, and it’s become one of my favourite instrumental pieces” says Jonathan. The collaboration is the culmination of a friendship stretching back to their time studying together at Leeds College of Music. While their musical careers took different paths, both artists discovered they shared a deeply intuitive approach to composition.

The release follows a period of remarkable artistic and personal growth for Jonathan. Since releasing Deepings: A Song of Spirit, he has performed across India and South Africa, toured the UK with Nubiyan Twist, undertaken artist residencies, developed large-scale conceptual works exploring disability, spirituality and ethics, and continued to expand his practice as a composer, producer, flautist, vocalist and drummer.
