Me & Me Princess / Jay Darkside Remix
Lightning Head
Released: 1 Jun 2023
Label: Tru Thoughts
‘Me & Me Princess/Jay Darkside Remix’ is the latest single from Lightning Head aka Glyn “Bigga” Bush, former “midi maestro” of Rockers Hi Fi and current spearhead of Magic Drum Orchestra. The single features the original raw and funky “Me & Me Princess”, along with a remix from up-and-coming drum & bass producer and DJ Jay Darkside and a refreshed, darker “Version 2”.
“Me & Me Princess” is taken from ‘Studio Don’, the pivotal first solo album from Lightning Head. Glyn describes the original track as “a really positive tune, summery, uplifting” which set the tone for the project. Released on the fledgling Best Seven imprint, (part of the Berlin-based Sonar Kollektiv label family, founded by DJ Daniel W. Best) in 2002 and re-issued on Tru Thoughts, the project garnered support from Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Ross Allen, Ashley Beedle and many more.
“Me & Me Princess” features the vocalist, Singing Bird along with “lots of clavinet and dirty bass”, Glyn adds. Jay Darkside, ups the tempo and adds a new energy with his tough beats, influenced by the diverse sounds from early rave and jungle (The KLF, The Prodigy, Goldie) through to breakbeat and D’n’B. Jay Darkside has DJ’d at legendary clubs including Ministry Of Sound, Gatecrasher (Heaven), and Brixton Academy as well as curating mixes for brands like Superdry and Concrete Junglist, and hosting radio shows on pirate/online stations Vision FM, Upfront FM and Dynamic Breaks. He has also recently won Viper Recordings ‘Underneath The Shadows’ DJ Comp. Supported by DJ Mag (Top 10 Charts), Judge Jules (BBC Radio 1) and Taxman (Playaz Recordings), Jay Darkside has had releases on Sinister Recordings and the Unstable Label. “‘Version 2’ stays true to the OG but turns the lights down low”, Glyn explains, he wanted to make it “a bit darker but with a more obvious dancehall rhythm”. Combining heavy reverbs, a 303 bassline, swirling phasers and dubbed-out vocals.
