Label: Tru Thoughts

Nigerianborn, London-based singer, songwriter, musician and producer Steven Bamidele steps forward with “Cuckoo Goes The Clock feat. Cam Thomas”, as he announces his keenly anticipated sophomore album, ‘THE CRASH!’ (out 5th September). Steven will be celebrating the release of the LP with his biggest London headline show to date at the legendary 100 Club on Wednesday 17th September.

The track follows previous singles “The Fool feat. Sly5thAve” and Exoskeleton which saw support from BBC Radio 3 (Soweto Kinch), BBC 6 Music (Huey Morgan), BBC London (Jumoké Fashola), featured on the Jazz FM B-List playlist (Danielle Perry – track of the week, China Moses, Tony Minvielle), Worldwide FM (Rohan Rakhit w/ Jamz Supernova), KCRW (Novena Carmel, Ro “Wyldeflower” Contreras), Iggy Magazine, Fusicology and more.

A groove-laced, lyrically sharp track, “Cuckoo Goes The Clock” explores the mob mentality that follows an unwelcome disruption to daily life, bursting the apathetic bubble many choose to live in. It’s a track that holds up a mirror, both personal and societal. “Who’s going to be the straw to break the camel’s back / while the rest of us are working on our feigned reactions,” Steven sings, reflecting on who takes action in times of crisis and who remains still, himself included.

Featured UK Hip-Hop artist Cam Thomas brings a counterpoint: approaching the idea of the good life from the angle of ambition without accountability. His verse reflects on people chasing success without putting in the work or planning for the reality that comes with it. Though the track now pulses with immediacy, it began as something far more brooding. “It was originally something completely different,” Steven shares. “Once I stumbled across this one drum loop in the edit, the entire feel of the song shifted. It just snapped into place.”

Out 5th September, ‘THE CRASH’ is a sonically rich concept album exploring themes of purpose, doubt and searching for meaning in an imperfect world. Throughout the release, Steven examines his relationship with creativity through an allegorical story of forbidden love – featuring aliens and touches of the supernatural. A dreamlike sequence of personal reckoning, ‘THE CRASH’ is a soulful self-assured body of work, layered with introspection and jazz fusion.
