Sandunes’ “Follow Me feat. KAVYA” gets a dark, 2step rework by Zed Bias for exclusive release on Tru Thoughts’ 25th anniversary ‘Shapes 25’

Sandunes and Zed Bias unleash a dark, UK bass remix of “Follow Me feat. Kavya”. The original track, taken from Sandunes’ latest album,The Ground Beneath Her Feet, is reworked into a dub-step-influenced floor filler by MOBO-nominated Zed Bias, a producer and DJ known for his seminal work as a pioneer of the UK’s underground sound. Over his career, Zed Bias has produced under aliases like Maddslinky and forms one-half of the duo Phuturistix

The track is featured exclusively on the 25th-anniversary edition of our ‘Shapes‘ series, ‘Shapes 25′, compiled by Robert Luis, as one of 30 tracks showcasing our eclectic roster from its inception in 1999 to the present day.

Sandunes’ – aka composer, producer and pianist Sanaya Ardeshir – original track channels the empowering essence of women, featuring singer-songwriter KAVYA and her ethereal, siren-like vocals. The release was accompanied by an enchanting live rendition recorded at Island City Studios and made in collaboration with Novation. Blending elemental sounds, the instrumental evokes the surge of water and desert heat with shimmering synths and fiery lyrics. Zed Bias – aka Dave Jones – repurposes the Indian-electronic soundscape, priming the mix for rave-playout with a heavy sub bass and 2-step percussion. The release follows Bias’ UKG remix of another track from Sandunes transcendental album, “Signs feat. Ramya Pothuri”.

Although Sandunes is now based in LA, the pair met back when she lived in Mumbai. “I met Sanaya in Mumbai a few years ago. She performed before me at a night called Krunk at Bonobo. Since then, I’ve been a fan of her music. I was delighted when she approached me to remix a song from her album,” Zed Bias explains.

I will never forget his generosity – he shared a lot of music with me that evening and encouraged me to keep DJing – I always loved his music and would always drop his tunes in my DJ sets, which meant a lot to me! It was rare to meet a British DJ performing in India who was kind and aware of the myriad of power dynamics that existed at the time – I have a lot of respect for him!” Sandunes.

Zed Bias is best known for his UKG anthem “Neighbourhood”, which reached #25 in the UK Singles chart in July 2000 on Locked On/XL recordings. For over two decades, Zed Bias has built a repertoire of over 500 releases, spanning genres from house, dancehall, funk, broken beat, dubstep and dub reggae, leaving an indelible mark on the UK club scene. Whitney Houston, Slum Village, Pharaohe Monch, Missy Elliot, MJ Cole, Sticky, and Tubby T are just a few of over two hundred artists he’s remixed for. As well as being a pioneer of UK garage/2-step, broken beat, and UK funk, he was also one of the original resident DJs at the infamous club FWD>>, the East London birthplace of Dubstep culture. Since then, Zed Bias has toured the world as a DJ and a guest lecturer for Red Bull Music Academy. Dave Jones has also released music on Tru Thoughts under his Zed Bias alias with the ‘Biasonic Hotsauce’ album, as Maddslinky with the ‘Make A Change’ and ‘Make Your Peace’ albums, and through the super heavyweight Sleepin’ Giantz project with Rodney P and Fallacy.
