Sandunes

Released: 8 Aug 2024

Label: Tru Thoughts

Sandunes follows the release of her album ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’ with a 2-step UKG remix of “Signs” from the MOBO-nominated “godfather of dubstep”, Zed Bias, a musician and DJ known for his seminal work as a pioneer of the UK’s underground sound. Over his career, Bias has produced under aliases like Maddslinky and forms one-half of the duo Phuturistix.

Although Sandunes is now based in LA, the pair met back when she lived in Mumbai. “I met Sandunes in Mumbai a few years ago. She performed before me at a night called Krunk at Bonobo. Since then, I’ve been a fan of her music. I was delighted when she approached me to remix a song from her album,” Bias explains.

“I will never forget his generosity – he shared a lot of music with me that evening and encouraged me to keep DJing – I always loved his music and would always drop his tunes in my DJ sets, so that meant a lot to me! It was rare to meet a British DJ performing in India, who was kind and aware of the myriad of power dynamics that existed at the time – I have a lot of respect for him!” Sandunes

Zed Bias takes on “Signs”, reframing the dynamic soundscape with his 2-step UKG ingenuity. The original track, featuring Ramya Pothuri, is taken from Sandunes’ third album, ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’. “Signs” was the first song on the album that Sandunes wrote, exploring the bardo between life and death, the signs we interpret from beyond, and the inevitability of change. “I wrote “Signs” while I was on a 6-week excursion through the Western Ghats…. We recorded the vocals with Ramya while we were in Goa”, she explains, expanding on its meaning: “It’s a song about transformation, and the relationship to the body, about non-physical guidance”. The evocative remix creates an exciting collaboration between two innovative artists in the electronic music scene, combining Bias’ signature floor-filling drums with Sandunes’ ethereal production, the delicacy of Victor Angeleas’ mandolin and Ramya Pothuri’s mystical voice.
