Call Sender

Released: 23 Jul 2024

Label: Tru Thoughts

Following the debut of their timeless jazz-funk LP, “Lost To The Storm”, Call Sender – the collaborative brainchild of Paul Elliott and Michael Reed – received a remix from legendary American musician, producer, award-winning video game composer and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee.

Their remix journey continues with three fresh interpretations by industry icons Malcolm Catto, Mophono and Project Gemini.

“It’s an honour to hear these remixes by our heroes, friends and legends in their own rights. We are delighted to present these reimagined tracks that are taken to new stratospheric funky heights” Call Sender

Malcolm Catto, an eclectic British drummer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and record producer, is renowned for his work as the leader of the groundbreaking East London psych-jazz-experimental outfit, The Heliocentrics. Malcolm has been a force in the music industry since his debut with the left-field funk ensemble Soul Destroyers in 1999. Over the years, he has ventured into various genres, including rock, jazz, soul, funk and world music, working with notable artists such as Madlib, DJ Shadow and Mulatu Astatke. Malcolm’s “Mad Mark” remix exemplifies his signature style, offering a dark, brooding and psychedelic interpretation that transforms the original track into a digger’s delight. Paul Elliott praises Malcolm, “I’ve been a fan of Malcolm’s drumming and production for years. I’ve also spent time with him in the studio recording for different projects. In my opinion, there is no one else that can get this sound – his sound. Otherworldly, raw, dusty, mysterious and super funky!.”

Project Gemini, the alias of musician, producer and writer Paul Osborne, puts his unique spin on “The Black Dog.” His remix infuses retro B-movie soundtrack vibes with fuzz guitar, funky bass and lush cinematic sounds, transforming the track into a vivid auditory experience, reminiscent of an Italian Giallo thriller or a Morricone-esque film score. Call Sender honour Project Gemini’s work, saying “he blew us away with his epic cinematic theme for “The Black Dog” remix.”

Mophono, also known as Benji Illgen and DJ Centipede, infuses an electronic pulse into “Wilderness”, showcasing his mastery of 60s psychedelic and experimental electronic music. Known for his “Change the Beat” parties in San Francisco, Mophono has shared the stage with renowned artists such as DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus and De La Soul. His remix of “Wilderness” features a steady drone that culminates in a psychedelic chant, highlighting his ability to blend soul, D-beat and hip-hop with the original drums. Michael Reed applauds Mophono’s influence, noting how his “Change the Beat” parties revolutionised his music listening experience and how recording at Mophono’s Circuit Studios altered his approach to recording. This remix is quintessential Mophono, demonstrating his innovative approach and deep understanding of beat culture.
